The Heritage Research Staff:

The Heritage Research full-time, professional staff all have graduate degrees.  Disciplines represented by the staff include, among others, history, architectural history, environmental history, historical geography and historic preservation.  HRL's Project Directors and Project Managers include John N. Vogel, Traci E. Schnell, Michael McQuillen and Brian J. Faltinson, brief biographical information for which follows.  The firm also employs support staff.

John N. Vogel, Ph.D.

  • Ph.D. in American History from Marquette University, Milwaukee, WI (1989)

  • Associate Degree in Professional Photography, Layton School of Art & Design, Milwaukee, WI (1974)

  • Over twenty-four years of Cultural Resource Management experience, including historic resource surveys, property evaluations, assessment of effects documents, and Historic American Building Survey/Historic American Engineering Record (HABS/HAER) documentation

  • Over twenty-four years experience in Business and/or Legal History investigations

  • Experience throughout the Great Lakes region and other states, including: Washington, D.C., Oklahoma, Missouri, Iowa and Nebraska

  • Published a book on the Great Plains (Great Lakes Lumber on the Great Plains, University of Iowa Press, 1993), as well as had articles published in, among others, The Wisconsin Magazine of History and South Dakota History

  • Contributed to the forthcoming Encyclopedia of the Great Plains (University of Nebraska Press)

  • Professional presentations include papers recently offered at the National Trust for Historic Preservation's Conference Preserving the Historic Road in America (2002) and the Oklahoma Historical Society's Annual Meeting, the theme for which was Cities, Suburbs and Countryside (2003).

  • Adjunct Associate Professor in the School of Engineering, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Marquette University, Milwaukee, WI

John N. Vogel

Traci Schnell, M.A.

  • M.A. in Art History and Criticism (Architectural History emphasis) from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (1995)

  • Nine years of full-time Cultural Resource Management experience, all of which have been at HRL and include managing Historic Resource Surveys, Determinations of Eligibility for the National Register, National Register nominations, Assessment of Effects documents, as well as working on HABS/HAER documentation

  • Attends on an annual basis Professional Development seminars, including those offered by the Wisconsin Historical Society and Wisconsin Department of Transportation

  • Volunteered in 1997 as a docent for Historic Milwaukee, Inc., an organization that develops and conducts historical architectural tours around the City of Milwaukee--presently chairs the organization's Research Committee and serves on its Board of Directors

  • Experience throughout the Great Lakes region and other states, including Missouri and Iowa

Michael McQuillen, M.S.

  • M.S. in Historic Preservation from the University of Vermont, Burlington, VT (1998)

  • Five years of full-time Cultural Resource Management experience, four of which have been at HRL and include managing Historic Resource Surveys, Determinations of Eligibility for the National Register, National Register nominations, Assessment of Effects documents, Rehabilitation Tax Credit Certification Projects, Historic Preservation Plans as well as working on HABS/HAER documentation

Brian J. Faltinson, M.A.

HRL Adjunct Staff:

To serve our clients as effectively and efficiently as possible, Heritage Research has developed relationships with with other individuals and organizations that allow it to offer additional services and expertise on an "as needed" basis.  Accordingly, HRL is proud to acknowledge the following "Adjunct Staff" members of its team: 

 

David Keene, Ph.D.

  • President of Archaeological Research, Inc. (ARI), a firm that he established in 1991, with offices in Chicago (IL), Woodstock (IL) and Madison (WI)

  • Ph.D. in Anthropology from the University of Wisconsin (Madison) in 2001

  • Registered Professional Archaeologist

  • Previously a member of the faculty at Loyola University of Chicago, where he presently serves on an advisory board for the university's program in public history 

  • Specializes in conducting archaeological investigations throughout the Midwest

  • Endeavors directed by Dr. Keene include Phase I, II and III studies as they pertain to the archaeological components of Section 106/Compliance projects for engineering firms (transportation projects), telecommunications companies (cell phone tower placement) and developers (subdivisions and other land development projects)

  • Served on the board of the Landmarks Preservation Council of Illinois (LPCI) from 1992 to 1999, and served as the organization's president from 1996-1999 (LPCI is the state-wide organization that promotes historic preservation education for the state of Illinois)
